Genesis 9

Genesis 9 (Gods covenant with Noah)



"Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth." (9:1)

"As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.” (9:7)

God commands yet again, Be fruitful and multiply proving life is precious and his desire for new life. (Physically & Spiritually)

⁸ Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: ⁹ “I now establish my covenant with youand with your descendants after you ¹⁰ and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. ¹¹ I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

¹² And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: ¹³ I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.¹⁴ Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, ¹⁵ I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. ¹⁶ Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”

¹⁷ So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”

**Rainbow- "many colored" grace of God. His faithfulness and grace.

God hasn't promised we won't experience storms, but He has promised that the storms won't destroy us! 

Note the word remember again...Not that he forgets but it is used to remind us of the fulfillment of His promise to ALL of us!!

V. 20-27

Noah drank wine and lay uncovered in the tent. Noahs son, Ham (rather than covering his father and keeping it to himself) told his brothers ( Sham & Japheth) who backed in and covered their father without looking at him. (9:23)

*Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8)

When Noah awakes and finds himself covered he curses Canaan (Son of Ham) and blesses "the God od Shem, and enlarge Japheth" (v.26-27). 

Genesis 8

Genesis 8 (The Flood is over)

*Noah sens a raven and a dove and after many attempts of sending them out/back again is able to confirm dry land is near!

8:1 But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded.

God did not forget Noah and all of the people/livestock with him! God knows ALL; therefore, this is written to stress that God paid attention to, fulfilled a promise and acted on behalf of his people!

8:20
Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and cleanbirds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it.

After a year (and some odd days) Noah and his family came off the ark and Noah worshipped the Lord!

²¹ The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though^[a] every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.

²² “As long as the earth endures,
seedtime and harvest,
cold and heat,
summer and winter,
day and night
will never cease.”

God reaffirms natural order and foreshadows to his promise of no more floods to destroy ALL flesh.

Genesis 5-7

Genesis 5 (Adams descendants to Noah)

Out of both Cain and Seth's lineage brought change! See the lineages below:

*Notice the closeness in names and even same names (Lamech & Enoch)

A few things to note about some of the sethite men:

Enoch, along with Elijah are the only 2 men in the bible that God took to heaven alive!

Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

(5:24)

Methuselah was the oldest man to live

Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died. (5:27)

Noah (meaning rescue) was named to bring comfort/relief to the family (5:29)

*Foreshadow to the flood which Noah and his family would be spared from! 

Genesis 6 (Building up to the flood)

Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with^[a] humans forever, for they are mortal^[b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.” (6:3)

*Foreshadow to the flood.

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. ⁶ TheLord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. ⁷ So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” ⁸ But Noah found favor in the eyes of theLord. (6:6-8)

Genesis 1:25

God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Parallels to 

Genesis 6:12

God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.

*Since Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord (6:8)

God gives Noah a specific plan for preparing for the flood to come.

Although Noah prepared he waited on GOD!

** This shows us the importance of waiting on God! Even if we KNOW we have heard from God and our doing His work we must wait for his anointing and trust in his perfect timing; regardless of our desire to know what is next! HIS faithfulness and timing prove themselves to exceed even our "best" time and time again...

But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. (6:18)

*First time the word covenant is mentioned in the Old Testament. 

Genesis 3-4

Genesis 3 (The Fall )

v16 God give a command to Adam & Eve.
"for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."

When Eve tells the serpent she says...
"...Neither shall you touch it, lest you die."

We are in a dangerous spot when we add to, or do not take the word of God JUST as it is written.

Serpent says to Eve:
"You will not surely die."

Satan always opposes the word or God and cannot be trusted!

*After Adam & Eve ate of the fruit God asks (v9) "Where are you?"
He is God and is all knowing; therefore He did not ask because he was lacking in knowledge. He asked because he was giving Adam the opportunity to be honest and confess his sin.


Genesis 4 (Cain and Abel)

Cain- Acquired (Life comes from God)
Abel-Worker of livestock (Life is Brief)
Cain kills Abel
God then asks 4 questions to Cain
*2 prior to Abels death
*2 after Cain kills Abel


God still blesses Cain by protecting him from death by leaving a mark on him so all would spare his life. (4:15)

After Cain remains unrepentant, Cain leaves the presence of God. (4:16)

Cain then marries and the lineage of the "Cainites" begins.

Eve becomes pregnant again (Seth) and the lineage of "Sethites" begins.

Genesis 1&2

God:

1. Creates (1:1-2)

2. Forms (1:3-13)

3. Fills (1:14-27)

We are created:

By God (2:7, 21-23)

In HIS image! (1:27)

God creates Adam to work and keep the land (Adam-Formed from the ground)

God takes Adams rib (side) to create Eve

Eve a helper for Adam. (Eve-Mother of the living)

Names her woman - (made from man)

In regard to Eve, she was made FROM him and FOR her, and he NEEDED her!

*She was not created from his head to rule over, nor his feet to be ruled over but from his rib.

To be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved!

..."Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." (2:24) 

-The beauty and power of the Marriage Covenant.

I hope this spurs you on and encourages you to dig deep into His word!

If any season is to be declared "Wedding Season" I would say this is it! I have the privilege of standing by 5 of my closest friends this summer as I have been/will be a part of their special day!! It is such a joy to see your friends be pursued by amazing men who love and cherish them as they then prepare to enter into a marriage covenant with Christ and the church!

Enjoying this season!

This season of life...

What a sweet, sweet season of life this is for me...

Having just graduated college and in between college life and the "real world", I am embracing this season of down time, as I depend on the Lord each day to provide and meet my needs for each day. Though so many things are about to change, I cannot jump ahead of myself but walk at the pace and in the steps He has laid out for me one day at a time!

Over the last several of weeks I have been nannying for 3 precious little kids who are all so special in a variety of ways. Our days are always filled with adventures, endless amounts of laughter and stories I could go on and on about! All this to say, these little ones have won me over! What a special reminder of how precious children are in the eyes of the lord... Their is nothing like the faith and love of a child!
