Genesis 19

Genesis 19 (God rescues Lot)

V. 1-2

Lot asks the 2 angels to come spend the night at his house, but they want to spend the night in the town square. 

v.3 

..."Lot pressed them strongly" so they entered his house.

v4. During the night the men of Sodom surround Lots house and demand to see the men.

v. 6-8 Lot pleads for them to go away and even offers his daughters if they agree to leave the men alone. (This is disturbing as he is not representing the love of a father but only considering himself.)

v9. They (the men of Sodom) begin pushing their way in the house and the angels reach out, "strike the men with blindness", and bring Lot back inside to safety.

*Had Lot listened and allowed the angels to pass they (and he) would not be in danger, but because of his persistence/stubbornness with the angels they had to rescue Lot.

v.23-29 God destroys Sodom

v26. Lots wife looked back and became a pillar of salt.

*When we look back or even hesitate when God has called us forward we move ourselves outside the will of God. 

*Remember from Genesis 18 God could have spared the city had he found 10 believers, but since this was not possible, God mercifully rescued the believers they did find. 

¹⁶ When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.

*God delivered Lot BECAUSE of Abraham (19:29)

²⁹ So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.

v.30-38

Lot and his two daughters live in a cave. The daughters give their father wine and sleep with him. (oldest first night, the younger the next).

Each daughter becomes pregnant and the following lineages begin.
